![]() Japan's terrain is worst than Korea is those outlying island. Hence M1, Leopard, Merk 4 and Challenger are bigger and heavier as the terrain permit their monster size and waist. M1 is design more to fight in the central plain of Germany (fulda gap?) and middle east. It is not design to fight in broad open desert like the terrain in middle east where tree obstruction is rare. Its smaller maybe because the terrain in korea is more rugged and has more trees. ![]() Korean K-1 is probably a scale down version of M1. From the money point of view, you can buy two to three Merkeva MK4 for every Leclerc. Merkeva 4 cheaper is cheaper than M1A2, Leo2A6 and is FAR cheaper than the Type 90 (8 million usd !!!) and the almost equally expensive leclerc. The modular nature of the tank permit such an improvement should the need arise. But the material of the armour can be improve. Merkeva 4 about 65 ton, probably the most spacious, heaviest and well armour tank on earth. It would be interesting to see what a Merkeva 5 would look like and what kind of engine and armour it will be equip with. The Merkeva MK4 adoption of the reliable, fuel efficient and powerful MTU licensed GD883 is a right direction. In short, use the design philosophy of Merkeva 4 but the material science and components of Abram and Leopard2. The ultimate tank would probably be a tank that use most of Merkeva design feature, philosophy and silhoutte BUT uses a LV-100-5 gas turbine to confer STEALTH (its very silence) and acceleration (gas turbine has much better acceleration capability compare to diesel not to mention smaller engine size per unit output), as well 2nd or 3rd generation Chobham or composite armour. In terms of electronics, M1A2SEP and Type90(from Japan) should be superior while Leo2A6 and Leclerc long barrel gun should have an extra 2MJ to 3 MJ worth of muzzle energy. However, I still believe that M1A2 and Leo2A6 contain armour that consist of more exotic and advanced material. ![]() As I have said elsewhere, Merkeva is the best tank from an ARCHTECTURAL an DESIGN PHILOSOPHY point of view. Hmm, agree on your thoughts about Merkeva. ![]()
